If he is not in pain I would go back to lunging in large arena. Quit trying the canter for a couple weeks work on perfecting the walk trot and whoa do other things like backing up long line at walk work on giving to the bit and making circles make your time positive. Your horse is telling you it’s too much and you are moving too quickly. Once you give it a break for awhile if he is having a good day at the trot start walking behind him more than usual almost driving position and ask gently and SLOWLY increase your ask he might canter or fight. If he fights continue to pull nose to inside and ask stay calm it’s not the end of the world it’s a speed bump in a marathon. Also make sure he is 100% cool and calm with lunge line EVERYWHERE on his body and your whip. You can also work with tarp on his body to see his response to new stimuli. If he does canter keep it short 8 strides ask for walk and release all commands and praise the crap out of him
