Good question. I have have a few horses in a rehab situation that objected to having the girth being tightened. First thing I look at(and no one likes to hear this) is saddle fit. Saddle pad and appropriate support(is your horse high in the hind end, thus sloping towards the withers?). Also if your saddle, like a lot of newer all purpose saddles, has position choices and your horse is short backed, u may want to select a different position for your girth. I have found comfort girths that work better than others, and I’m not being condescending. It’s just hard, from my experience, to say your favorite saddle isn’t your mounts favorite.
