Reply To: explaining that a show ring is not a race track

He only does this in the show ring, and I cannot stop and make him back up there. The rest of the time, he is generally fine. In fact, sometimes I’d like him to wake up a bit! He also enjoys backing, sidepassing and other things that really should not be so much fun. Just the other day, I had him turned out in the ring, and he decided to go around jumping over things. He likes to jump. At my age (66), I find his happy-go-lucky, there is no need to be rated into these jumps, I’d like them to be higher so I will jump the height I want attitude a bit unnerving, so I don’t jump him anymore. I also find the forward seat position really painful on my knee (need a new one of those), so we are trying to work on collection and balance.

It is never the horse's fault
