I bow to your superior wisdom regarding race horses, as I have only dealt with a very limited number, and those few had one lead they liked, and that was the lead they always took automatically. With time & patience, they learned to pick up the “correct” lead, but given their druthers, they had one strongly preferred lead.

The point I was trying to make is that bending the horse to the outside as part of the command to pick up a specific canter lead is not logical, given the fact that horses moving freely without a rider will pick up the lead that is correct for the direction in which they plan to turn, or circle. Most horses don’t have to be taught to do flying lead changes, they only have to be taught to do them on command.
