I’ve found that feeding too much flaxseed meal creates the desire in my horses to chew my fences. I’ve been observing and experimenting with this behavior in all 4 of my horses for three years now. Maybe it’s just coincidence, but I have found that when I add Omega Horseshine, or other supplements that are flaxseed based, the wood persistent chewing starts. Some of my horses will pick at my fence when they are bored or want to get my attention, but the serious wood chewing (particularly in the horses that don’t chew the wood out of boredom) seems to start when I feed the flax. I’ve switched to supplementing with rice bran oil, and no longer have the wood chewing issue.
