And just a note on the bute trial… this was the first thing my vet had me do when I went to her with my concerns. She noted that my horse was stepping slightly short on one hind (the leg I was concerned about), mostly at slower gaits (eg. obvious at a jog more so than a working trot), and she thought she saw the stifle catch at one point. Flexion tests showed nothing at all, so she had me try bute for 3-4 days to see if it made a difference in order to determine whether it was a functional lameness (ie. loose stifle) or a painful lameness. Bute didn’t make a single difference so I put him into more work, had his back feet shod (he was already shod up front) and now you’d never know he had that issue to begin with!
