The first email is a simple inquiry if you have space available for 3 months. The second emails I have copied & pasted below.
The scam is that the person inquiring about boarding sends a fake cashiers check, which I verified is fake with a phone call to the bank (Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union), Media, PA. The bank officer said they had over 30 phone calls on these checks in the last 6 months. What the scammer hopes you will do is pay the shipper before the cashiers check has had time to clear. Unless you have verified the check is good you will be out any money you have paid the shipper. PS, I looked up the address of the sender and there is actually a house at the return address. So it all looks good but still means nothing related to the authenticity of the email.
The following is a copy emailed to our farm from a woman who was planning a move to our area and wanted to prepay 3 mnoths board including the shipping cost.

” Thank you for your email sent sorry am hard hearing person that explain the reason to my text and emails for better communication.I will like you to reserve a Full care boarding Stall of 12weeks (3months) for my horse as i am relocating soon to your state, his info’s as follow.

It would have been suspicious to me with all the grammar errors. Anytime I get an email where they can’t properly type out a sentence in english, raises red flags.
Glad you didn’t get scammed by these people. I hope you share this with all the local barns in your area. Maybe post these emails up in local feed stores.

regarding the statement you made about grammatical errors – if this person really was hearing impaired and attended a school for the deaf this is generally how their written communications sound. American Sign Language’s word order is different from spoken English and they often write how they “talk” with the sign language. I am from St. Augustine where the Florida School for the Deaf is located and minored in Deaf Studies at Florida State University so I have had lots of opportunities to interact with people who have hearing impairments. Just letting you know in case you ever do interact with someone that is hearing impaired!

Western Union would be a red flag for me. Plus, do shippers need money up front or do they wait to get paid when they deliver? I’m just asking cause I have never used a shipping service.

Plus I think I would be very cautious in handing out my “full name” and address and all phone numbers to an unknown. Identity theft is rampant but that ad did sound like some of the others — dogs usually — I want a dog and will send you more $$ and you refund me the difference. Yeah, right. This scam was tried on my friend who was raising TWalkers and had some for sale. She told me about it and I told her I was Santa Clause and that I had a bridge for sale!

That email looked more like someone who doesn’t speak english at all. And I deal with the hearing impaired often in my job and they write out sentences just fine.
Either way it was a scam and it has all kinds of red flags.

Oh, this just screams NIGERIAN SCAM!

I disagree that people trained in AMERSLAN (sign language) would misspell words and use poor grammar. I spent 25 years teaching special ed, and believe me, there’s no relationship between spelling, grammar, and deafness.

There used to be a website where a woman who called herself “Bustedupcowgirl” played scams back on these folks. It was hilarious! She actually got money from them instead of getting taken.

I wound up getting a few similar offers, my fave being the one that wanted to buy my daughter’s Breyer model horse for his imaginary daughter to ride. Same EFL language errors but a lot more ALL CAPS. LOL I explained that it was a plastic horse, but the “buyer” was undeterred, and we went through a hilarious process during which I told him the mare wouldn’t be suitable as she was a little wild, but I had a pair of garden weasels for the same price. We were on the verge of a deal when I blew him up. When he figured out I was busting on him, he cursed me and my children into eternity. I still laugh every time I think about it.

One of the biggest red flags to me is the assumption that anyone would just send a horse off to some facility they have never seen, without a contract. As for the shipping cost, that is (or used to be) paid up front before anyone would take a horse anywhere. I agree with all of the above posters.

I had the same or a very similar e-mail about 6 or 8 months ago, but the whole thing, including the very poor English grammar, triggered major alarm bells. There were too many oddities for me to take the request at face value, so I e-mailed back with a whole string of questions, including why would anyone send a valuable horse to a place he/she had never seen, into the care of a person he had never met, and from whom had he heard about me? I never heard back. This was too close to the more typical scam of “I will send you a check for $X, and you can wire me $X and keep the rest”, except that the check is a fraud, and instead of making money, the recipient loses money. At least I am not the only one who received this scam e-mail.

How stupid do these scammers think we are?

What horse owner would book a stall at a barn he had not even seen pictures of, much less visited in person, BEFORE he knew what the monthly board would cost!

Thank you KGM for starting this topic. When I got my version of the same basic e-mail, I knew that there was a 99% chance it was a scam, but was not sure what to do about it. It would be nice if we could get some nationwide TV coverage so that more people would be aware this is going on. Local stations do pick up on local scams, and even nationwide ones. BSBubbles, have you contacted your local police or sheriff’s dept & local TV station? If you can get it on local TV, other TV station news departments will often pick up on odd ball things like this scam, especially on a slow news day.
