My new boy has decided that he is going to kick his back feet when I go to pick up his fronts. He just started this.
What I’ve been doing is putting him in the round pen and making him work. Once he stands still and lifts, without kicking, one foot, we are done.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
The roundpen work took 20 mins last night.

Hmm, maybe carry a hand whip and when he does lift his hind leg to kick give him a firm tap on his hindquarters with it and say “no” in a firm voice, and then continue cleaning his front hooves. I don’t know if this would work, but I’ve done it a few times on my donkey and she quit doing it. Hope this helps 🙂

After 2 days of him doing this and being worked, he stopped.
When he first did it, he’d get a smack on the shoulder and I’d tell him no.
I don’t want to use too much “hitting” as reinforcement since he came from an abusive home.

Oh yeah, don’t want to remind him of his old home. I’m glad he has let up now! I hope he quits for good! 🙂
