I do think that a Shetland pony or a similar size pony would carry the weight of an adult just fine. Especially to just ride around in a pasture for a little bit (just like you said). I see no problem in letting a person, wanting to learn to ride, on a pony that is fit for their level of experience.
If you can find a pony that can comfortably hold your weight, totally! I’m 5’3 and I ride a 13.2 POA mare. POA’s are great and versatile, would reccomend owning one!
