Hello all,
I’m looking for a recommendation for a western saddle that can fit my paint mare… She is 15.2 h and has a short back. I’m looking for a western saddle with a skirt length less than 28″ and with wide bars if possible. I am having a hard time trying to find a western saddle that fits her well. ‘I’m hoping someone may be able to point me in the direction of where I can find a western saddle that I can order without having to have something custom fit, at least for right now.
Thank all!
April 30, 2016 at 9:39 pmHi,
My recommendation is go to an actual tack store and talk to someone who you can describe your exact needs and most will give you the saddle on a trial and you can try as many as you want. I of course know also tack stores are not everywhere, or at least where I live, so I suggest Circle Y. I absolutely love mine and it fits both my horses who are very different shapes. I hope this helps!May 17, 2016 at 8:13 amLots of Barrel and Trail saddles have short skirts. I just found a nice synthetic trail saddle with a 21″ skirt that comes in a few different sizes. Also, if you’re not totally attached to having a horse, look into Australian saddles or Endurance saddles. They will all have shorter skirts. The only other thing i can think of would be her shoulders. Make sure she hast unrestricted shoulder movement. If it becomes an issue with these short skirted saddles, look into saddles made for gaited horses. Hope this helps!

Not horse..woopsMay 31, 2016 at 6:30 pmhttp://www.horsesaddleshop.com has a form you can fill in with your horse’s measurements, your details (height/weight etc), what type of saddle you want and how much you want to pay. Based on that, they give you recommendations for saddles that would be a good fit for you and your horse. Even if you don’t buy from them, it gives you a good starting point. I bought one of the saddles they recommended (got it brand new for half price on Ebay) and it fits my hard to fit horse perfectly!
July 30, 2016 at 1:22 pmHave you tried a Tucker Saddle? You can find them online – even used they retain their value.

October 17, 2016 at 1:03 amI just posted my Meleta Brown 16″ trail saddle for sale. It fit my 14.2 chubby mare with a short back, mutton withers and broad shoulders. The tree is the same that Meleta Brown developed for her barrel saddle to give the horse more freedom of movement. I like the round skirt for a short backed horse. It’s made by the Crates Leather Co. and has quality written all over it. I spent months trying various saddles of different brands and weights. It can be a frustrating search. Good luck. I’ll attach a photo. In my post the photo is sideways and I don’t know why.
